Goodman modulating gas furnace fault codes (GMVM97, GCVM97, AMVM97)

Every fault code for this Goodman modulating gas furnace is below, with what it indicates and a verdict: whether you can safely check it or it is a call for a technician. Here the code shows on a 7-segment display. The source is Goodman's own service manual. Confirm your model is on the list; other Goodman controls use different codes.

How to read the display

These models show a two-character code on a small dual 7-segment display, visible through the sight glass on the front of the furnace. The codes are a letter pair such as EE3 or Eb9, not a count of flashes — a single-stage Goodman furnace uses flashing LED counts instead, with different meanings, so check that your model number is one of the ones listed above before reading anything below.

What each code means

Each code carries a safety verdict. Caution means there is a check you can safely make; pro-only means the correct repair is certified work and we do not walk through it here.

EE0 — Ignition lockout — no flame after three tries

Ignition lockout — no flame after three tries

The furnace tried to light its burners three times in one call for heat, sensed no flame each time, shut the gas off and locked out. The board clears itself about an hour later, or when power or the thermostat call is cycled.

What you can do: Confirm the gas supply is on and the furnace filter is not clogged, then reset once by lowering the thermostat for a few seconds. If it locks out again, stop — repeated ignition lockout is a gas, igniter or flame-sensing fault for a qualified technician.

EE1 — Low-stage pressure switch stuck closed

Low-stage pressure switch stuck closed

The control saw the low-stage pressure switch already closed while the draft blower was off, which should not happen, and waits until the fault clears. It points at a stuck switch or its wiring.

What you can do: There is no homeowner check for this one. It is a sealed-switch or wiring diagnosis for a technician.

EE3 — Open limit — usually restricted airflow

Open limit — usually restricted airflow

A primary, auxiliary or rollout limit opened, so the furnace ran its blowers to cool down. On this control the most common cause by far is simply not enough air moving across the heat exchanger.

What you can do: Replace a dirty filter and make sure supply and return vents are open and unblocked — a clogged filter is the leading cause and the one thing you can safely fix yourself. If it returns with a clean filter, a rollout limit can indicate a combustion problem, which is a technician's job.

EE4 — Flame sensed with no call for heat

Flame sensed with no call for heat

The control detected flame when the gas valve should be closed, and responds by running the blowers continuously with no further heating. Because it can indicate a gas valve that is not sealing, it is not a wait-and-see code.

What you can do: Call a qualified technician. If you also smell gas, leave and treat it as the emergency described above rather than a code.

EE6 — Weak flame-sense signal

Weak flame-sense signal

The furnace is running but the current the flame sensor reports has fallen below the level the control needs to trust that a flame is present. It usually means a coated or mispositioned sensor or a poor flame.

What you can do: Cleaning a flame sensor means pulling it from the burner assembly, which is combustion work this site does not walk through. Book a technician; it is usually a short, inexpensive visit.

EE7 — Igniter or grounding fault

Igniter or grounding fault

The control could not confirm a working igniter or a proper ground. The probable cause is a broken or badly connected igniter, or a grounding problem.

What you can do: Igniters are fragile and this is line-voltage and grounding work. Leave it to a technician.

EE9 — High-stage pressure switch stuck open

High-stage pressure switch stuck open

The control could not confirm the high-stage pressure switch closing. Among the causes it lists are a blocked flue or inlet pipe, a blocked condensate drain, a weak draft blower or a failing switch.

What you can do: You can safely check that the outdoor intake and exhaust terminations are clear of snow, leaves or a nest. The rest — the drain, the switch, the draft blower — is a technician's diagnosis.

EEA — Reversed polarity

Reversed polarity

The furnace will not operate because the line or low-voltage power leads are reversed, or the unit is poorly grounded. On a new installation this points back at the wiring; on a running furnace it points at a supply or transformer problem.

What you can do: This is electrical wiring, for an electrician or the installer. If the furnace was just installed, it is a callback for whoever wired it.

Eb1 — Lost communication with the blower motor

The control cannot talk to the variable-speed ECM blower motor, and the furnace will not run without it. The listed causes are loose or disconnected wiring between motor and control, a failed motor, or a failed control.

What you can do: A no-heat call for a technician. There is no homeowner-serviceable part here.

Eb5 — Blower motor locked rotor

The ECM blower motor failed to start after ten consecutive attempts. The listed causes are an obstruction in the blower housing or wheel, seized bearings, or a failed motor.

What you can do: A seized blower is a technician's job. Running the furnace hard while it is throwing this code risks overheating.

Eb9 — Low indoor airflow

Low indoor airflow

Measured indoor airflow fell below the minimum the furnace is configured for, so it stages down to try to recover and will stop entirely if airflow reaches zero. The listed causes are clogged filters, and blocked, restrictive or undersized ductwork.

What you can do: Start with the filter — a clogged one is the first cause listed and the one you can fix. Persistent low airflow with a clean filter points at duct design, which is a technician's assessment.
